Book Review: Crown of Smoke (Shadowscent #2) by P.M. Freestone

This is written somewhat differently to the first book. I enjoyed the character development and again the world building was on point. The diversity of the characters is lovely to see and what could be considered a HEA ending make this an enjoyable read. However this book felt very rushed and not to the same standard as the first. I was just disappointed in the pacing and the lack of focus. It feels like the author knew they had a deadline and were pushing themselves to fit everything in. Also it was difficult for me reading the two books so far apart, there wasn't much reflection or reminders from the first book that would have help. But, I have to say, isn't that cover gorgeous? The gold etching really makes this book stand out on the shelf. This book is a 3.5 stars for me.

Synopsis: In the empire of Aramtesh, scent has power. In the first volume, the prince was found poisoned in the temple, sparking a high-stakes quest for an antidote. In the explosive conclusion, Rakel and Ash are separated as the empire hurtles towards civil war, and everyone must choose a side.

Thank you Scholastic Australia for a copy in return for my independent and honest review.
