The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

(The Folk of the Air #1)

“Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.”

To start off with, I hated this book, I hated the characters and I hated the story it was telling. I thought it was awful, frustrating, maddening and horrific. But I couldn’t stop reading, because as much as I hated what was happening it was an intriguing tale. I literally read it in one sitting, one afternoon/evening. The writing was enthralling, pulling me in with each tiny little detail that exposed more depth to a character. Even the characters you would call sidekicks or side-characters were cleverly crafted, little tidbits into their personalities and actions being hinted at throughout the story. I started this book assuming it was a play on a bully romance with a fantasy twist, I was wrong, there is so much more. So the longer I read, the less I hated it and the more I loved it. Without getting into spoilers let’s just say I understand why everyone in going nuts about this series. Getting my hands on The Wicked King ASAP is my next priority… then I’ll have to patiently wait in agony for the third due out at the end of the year. My advice, read it, now. ★★★★★

P.S. Thank you Ally for sending me this copy!

See below for synopsis:

Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.
